well, Crackslist strikes again. scored a pair of Big Jon downriggers for 75 and a Humminbird sonar for 50. like to froze my butt off riding up there to get em, and i'm sure i looked funny on trip back with 2 downriggers on back of dirt bike and fishfinder between knees on the seat..........but the guy was anal about saving every little item, even the drilling template for transducer mounting.

$50 sonar = "freedom is just another word for nothing left to lose" when you leave boat in dry storage in Mexico

I think Chryslers looks really badass and if I had one in my possession I'd probably not be able to resist the temptation to throw money at it.

They look tough like a Panzer Tank, all squared off and ready for biz. I've heard they are really good motors too. Now off to the Chrysler Forum with you. I would try to save her if possible.

What's the deal with the lower, gears...?

Re: the 1967 Holiday 18 and Multiple Boat Syndrome

no, AFAIK, the gears are in OK shape. the housing and prop have been dragged/banged on the ground, probably due to the til/trim failing, to the point that there's not even enough stub left of the skeg to attach a stainless protector and the prop is toast. all fixable but the issue gets to be economics real fast......

GA, i think i missed all the strikes....too numb from cold. i need to get wife's car back together so i can get my truck back!

Re: the 1967 Holiday 18 and Multiple Boat Syndrome

Don, you prompted me to go out and test the shifting. all works as it should.

and i'm thinking that with my expert-welder buddy's help, it would be feasible to make and affix a new skeg.... TIG weld a triangular section of 3/16' alum plate to the housing, or at least build up enough of a stub to attach a stainless skeg cover. has anyone ever run a motor without a skeg or with one mostly worn off? how bad is the directional stability and turning?

had the shroud off and the access for service is beyond awesome compared to OMCs i've worked on. it actually uses a car-type separate distributor driven by a belt, so i can see there's one more item to fix/worry about. but anyway, i'm gonna try to use this thing if the compression checks out and it has spark at the distrib......those electronic ignition pieces look hard to find and expensive.

It effects pretty much nothing. However, as Chrysler props are a little rare, I wouldn't want to ruin one every time I bumped the bottom so you should repair the skeg.

Re: the 1967 Holiday 18 and Multiple Boat Syndrome

thanks EZ. the lower unit housing looks to be 1 piece so it's either build up the skeg or replace the lower unit....and while i've found a few possible lower units on fleebay, most of em want more than the $300 i paid for boat/motor/trailer! downside of being such a bottom feeder is that when you only pay a pittance for the boat, parts seem comparatively expensive!

i'm also looking at props. Mich Wheel has em in 15, 17 and 19 pitch, 13 1/4" diameter. which pitch would y'all recommend for an 18' holiday with 100hp, no skiing or tubing in the mission?

i bet the guy who drops 30K on a Starweld doesn't get the pleasure of evicting black widows and wasps from his outboard.......so there:p

Re: the 1967 Holiday 18 and Multiple Boat Syndrome

got the old Chrysler OB cleaned up this weekend and tested compression......120-130 on all 4 holes, on a motor that ain't run in 10+ yrs. and that's raw #s, not corrected for 4000' altitude. i realize it's prolly artificially high due to carbon on heads but it still sounds like my rings and jugs are in fine shape. got spark too....it actually uses a separate distrib (cogged belt driven) and basically a 70s Chrysler car electronic ignition. so this motor is a runner. was gonna start it, but realized i'd bought 5/16 fuel line and it takes 1/4". hopefully some time this week but i still need to reassemble the wife's car. chrysler should start, and if not, got carb kits on the way. shifts fine, so the big issue will be replacing the skeg on lower unit. but Franz the Chrysler parts guy has some and we can weld it on. then i just gotta get them Super Bee decals.

no one has any input on prop pitch?

so motor is in great shape, but transom on boat.... :-o knew i'd need to replace it at some point, but i can flex it by pulling on it, so i guess that's job 1. floors too, but that will let me put the 19 gal alum tank from the donor boat under floor in bow.

B - I got nuttin' on the prop. But good to hear the Chrysler is looking good. Check in the Chrysler or Prop forum - those guys might have an idea on the prop.

Dozer, that's a good idea on the video. in the meantime, here are some pics of the holiday

the chrysler, naked

other side:

the sad prop:

assembling all necessary fluids and tools in prep for starting motor....lopping shears are for removing old fuel line! starter fluid in brown bottle is for mechanic
http://s1221.photobucket.com/albums...view&current=fluidsntoolstostartdeadmotor.jpg

and last, a great idea i'm going to steal on a low-cost, rustproof handle for hatches etc:
http://s1221.photobucket.com/albums...n=view&current=goodbottomfeederhandleidea.jpg
if pic isn't clear, it's just hunk of copper water pipe pounded flat on ends and bent into shape...total cost maybe 25 cents.

finally, since it's been a slow picture week, here are some of the non-Starcraft tinnie that has been eating up my time of late:
http://s1221.photobucket.com/albums/dd462/payasodelmar/Appleby popup trailer/
the kitchen counter took many hours and still needs finishing, but folds flat to fit on floor when trlr is folded, and sets up in 5 min...will use a VW westy pump on momentary foot switch for water. i know this ain't strictly SC related but it's amazing how many ideas cross pollinate between projects and i'm sure i'll add a few things i learned on this project to the cabin of the Starchief

The bottom feeder handle came out great. At least the prop looks like all the fins are present. Good looking sink for the other tinny.

Re: the 1967 Holiday 18 and Multiple Boat Syndrome

i can't take credit for the bottom feeder handle....that was someone else's idea but thought i'd pass it along...old boats are expensive enough without paying $20 for door handle. i think idea could also be upscaled to maybe 1" tubing to work as a grab rail. and after few years on the boat, when it looks all patina'd and nautical, you go sell it in Santa Fe for big bux........ ;-)

Glen, i'm coming to believe that you're right on that. assumed when i bought the boat that motor was needing to be replaced; now, given the compression figures and the absence of evidence of "run hard n put up wet", i'm feeling like i got a windfall. it clearly hasn't been anywhere near salt water. Comprop still makes props for it so i'm gonna order a couple in 17 and 19 pitch. the one biggie will be the TnT motor, which giveth not a sound when power is applied....but it's not absolutely necessary since that inline four gives me enough leverage to hoist it by hand.

33 years old, and still able to get it up! :p IOW, the trim pump works just fine once Moron here figures out that it doesn't ground through the mounting and tries connecting a ground wire........*

got everything set up to start the Chrysler, but still working on mama's subie, so hopefully Sunday or Monday

* ya know, it's weird how these here BOAT things work. every time i find out that something works and won't need to be replaced, i think of something else that i'll need to spend the $ on to get it seaworthy. does Murphy have a brother who's a CPA?

Re: the 1967 Holiday 18 and Multiple Boat Syndrome

fired up the old chrysler this weekend and it seems to run fine even w/o doing the carbs......sorry no video cuz i wasn't sure that my muffs were getting water to the impeller (strange water intake configuration) so i shut er down pretty quick. one of the distrib terminals had come loose from cap, so i had JB'd it back in place til i can order a cap, using a clothespin for clamp. yup, first order of biz then became removing the JBwelded clothespin from distrib cap.

still stalled on doing much to this boat til i can get the title, but it seems much less intimidating to work on than the Starchief, probably because i'm planning on gutting it anyway while the Starchief is in good enough shape that i'm having to work around the stuff that don't need fixin.

i did decide on a paint scheme for it.....it won't get a full-on, strip-to-metal job, just scuffing, spot priming bare spots with self etching primer, and shoot. anyway, i was looking at pix of a great white shark, and then at the nose with the headlights.....you see where this is going? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Carcharodon_carcharias.jpg
