That darn lower unit...somebody help me please

So I have the lower end off my 1996 Evinrude 25 hp and now I cant get the water pump off because there is a coupling or something stuck on the end of the shift cable line thing. Do I have to disassemble that part too--cause I have already started and it hasnt helped? Man this sucks!!

That didn't help much...the problem we are having is this nut/bolt deal on the bottom end of the shift rod...it wont go through the water pump housing, which is what we are trying to replace, so we are stumped at how to get the housing off!!! It isnt threaded to the shaft itself although it has threads on it where it connects to drive the prop... what is the deal ? ?? I am so confused... will it pop off? Is it meant to come off?

Should be a nylon retainer on there, the nut slidesdown against it. Try moving the nut and pull the retainer off with pliers.

Remove the plastic keeper under the top nut. The keeper has a vertical slit that you can spread with your finger nail, or a small screwdriver and remove it. Then shift the motor into forward, and the upper nut can now be removed. Here is a pic.

So here is the deal... see that nut/bolt that is circled? well that needs to come off or else I need to remove it from the top. Is that what I need to do?

The nut should slide up the shaft and there is a plastic retainer that will come off and then the nut will slide down off of the shaft.
