Newest Academy vessel. Was the solid rocket booster recovery vessel for NASA shuttle missions. I envision a lot of wet feet on deck.

That is AWESOME for you.

And a shame they won't be using it longer.

Re: Thanks NASA

Nice! I imagine that excavator arm mounted back there will provide plenty of uses for setting a piling or removing or lifting something off the bottom..... even small boat recovery.

It looks a bit wide to be on a trailer :D So are you going to get the task of navigating it to the USMMA? Can I help!!! :D I will volunteer just for the ride ........ I will even bring a fishing pole! I will volunteer just so none of the students miss any "valuable" class time.

Short article here http://www.sacbee.com/2012/08/21/4744873/nasa-maritime-administration-announce.html and here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MV_Liberty_Star

Ummm, should you not be thanking the American tax payer? We paid for it.

I choose to reserve any special thanks to those who volunteer to give of themselves, not because the law of the land requires it.

If taxes weren't mandatory, would you reach in your pocket anyway and shell out some gas money so we can get her up here from Florida? I have Paypal! ;) :D

Bob, I would love to go myself but the curriculum schedule doesn't allow for that. I think the NASA crew is coming North. When I get on board, I'll troll a few lines up the East River for Ya!

So you are sayn' NASA gave of it's self? Now that's funny!

That depends, who are you & what are you going to do with it? & BTW you wouldn't get it away from the dock with the money I have in my pocket.

I think you misunderstood my point. I was not referring to thanking NASA. I was referring to thanking "taxpayers". Citizens pay taxes because it is the law. The alternative, not paying taxes, results in punishment. I do not offer THANKS to everyone who simply follows the law. That would be like jumping out of my car at every four way intersection with stop signs to THANK each driver for stopping. They stop because they will be punished if they are caught not stopping.

I do offer my sincere THANKS to people who give of themselves. Like those who volunteer to put out fires, or serve in our armed forces by choice, or coach the local little league, or give blood, or assist children. I thank them.

But when you say " should I not be thanking the American taxpayer, We paid for it?", my answer to you is no, you are just obeying the law. I pay taxes too.

As to who I am, I am an instructor teaching and training the future Merchant Marine officers of our nation. What I am going to do with it is utilize the vessel to teach and train.

I was simply joking about the gas money, I don't think my town could pay for the ride.

Anyway....thanks for replying! (couldn't resist) : )

BTW
The vessel was built and paid for by a private company, United Space Alliance, and only operated by NASA.

Sometimes the "hand me downs" can be right nice!

Make sure you check the transom and floor for rot, and if that's an OMC Stringer in the back ... I'd pass on the deal no matter how free it is :D

I think even Andrew Carnegie's best material may have some issues after thirty years of saltwater service. Gonna find out soon!

I'm guessing NASA was big on redundant systems...

We had a life raft on my fishing vessel we named "plan B". Same idea I guess.

OK, who should the Academy write a thank you note to? I thought about NOAA, but they didn't do anything except spend money appropriated by Congress. Then I thought about the manufacturer, but they only constructed the craft according to contract specifications. Sooo, bottom line, who should be thanked if not those who followed the law, paid a fair share of taxes (whatever that means these days), and provided the government with money to spend. Some of it on boats ...

All I'm going to say is that's an interesting stance on who to thank but whatever floats your boat, or ship in this case. ;-)

Good luck with your endeavor.
