Hi Guys,

Having an issue after 3 weeks of sitting started up my mercruiser 5.0 tks bayliner capri cuddy.. temp gauge
not moving everything else is and engine seems to get up to temp fine.

I have since replaced the temp sensor and installed a new quiksilver gauge to match the mercruiser sender,
still not working. I have tried different power/ground if i short the sensor wire to the block the gauge goes down?

Manifolds and thermostat less than 12 months old all original Mercruiser.
Does the same with the old gauge and all other gauges are working.

I am getting very frustrated haha, could it be a break in the sender wire? but if that was the case why does it go down when i ground it ..

Are you sure it's the sender you replaced? Most nowadays have an alarm sender also. The temp one is in the intake before the thermostat, or in the thermostat housing across from the alarm sender. Others may chime in I may be wrong on location.

Hi,

Thanks for the reply yeah definitely the sender the alarms on the right side with two wires which I have ordered as well cause the last owner has broken the clip and it's loose.

The one I have replaced from memory is 86490t mercruiser temp sender.

I have triple checked the diagrams and have a decent understanding of how its all connected.

What do you mean it goes down?
Mean it pegs hot maybe?
Yeah when I turn the ignition on the gauge flicks up a little , when I ground the sender wire to the block it drops down even lower. Everything says it should go up... hence I'm confused so I replaced it with a new mercruiser sender and New quiksilver gauge same thing.

that's what I thought also. that why I asked about the correct sender. Hhhmmm.
Yeah thats why I'm confused when I turn the ignition to on it flicks up a little, but when I ground the sender wire to the block it drops down like it loses all power. Everyone says it should go up and its not the gauge cause it does it on both.

Its either the wrong gauge or its miss wired. Check voltages and grounds

Check the gauge part number

North America standard is 240 ohms (cold) to 33 ohms (hot)
European standard is 33 cold to 240 hot

Now try touching a wire from the 'S' terminal on the back of the gauge to a known good ground (at the back of the instrument panel). If the gauge now pegs to full hot, then you have a broken wire between the gauge and the sender, most likely a bad connection in the engine harness connector (for the instrument harness).
