I have an 83 black max 150. The other day I was running about 3000 rpm and the temp gauge pegged out and the alarm sounded a solid alarm. The tattle tell was putting out and the engine didn't seem hot to the touch. I shut off motor waited a few seconds restarted engine temp gauge showed the engine was cool and tattle tell was putting out water. I ran slow for a minute or two. I laid into trottle and about a min. Or so it did the same thing.anybody have an idea what it could be.

Re: temp gauge and alarm

Check the wire to the sending unit. sounds likes it is grounding out. This would peg the gauge out.

Re: temp gauge and alarm

Start with a pump kit. Temp and alarm are two different sensors. Get a pressure guage..................

Re: temp gauge and alarm

I will check out the wire and make sure it is not grounding out. Will post my findings. As far as the water pump I just replaced it and might have an hour of run time. I am going to replace the thermostats just to be on the safe side. Thanks for the suggestions.

Re: temp gauge and alarm

Well it doesn't seem to be a grounding issue. My motor doesn't have a high temp sensor, or I should say that on the portside of motor where the sensor should be is an empty hole. Going tomorrow to get new temp sensor and thermostats. I fell that the problem is not of actual temp. And feel its more of some sort of bad sensor, but I am no boat mech. All ideas and suggetions are appriciated............
