115 hp mercury will not show water from telltale with ears on but will show great flow in a drum.
Is this a problem

If having poor water pressure on the muffs and muffs losing too much water at sides expect to achieve that condition.

A couple of idle comments on this unusual (to me) post. How the muffs fit surely affects performance, as does water pressure. With a properly fitting set and adequate pressure the flow should be better since there is no lift requirement....pressure preloads the impeller. Once the engine starts it uses some of the flow (sucks on it) so the excess will decrease.

In a drum, the water level is probably well above the water pump so it doesn't have to perform any "lifting" function. That may not be a good test of the integrity of your water pump's impeller. If you are talking about a 55 gallon drum that must have been interesting to get that engine in that drum and the reason for my initial comment. I never had any problem with dads 10 hp Scott Attwater as a kid, but a 115..... Other thing is running in a drum, your exhaust heats the water so you need to keep an eye on that.

There is no "sucking" or lifting" function.
Water pump must be submerged.
It is not a vacuum pump.

Ok how about "consuming" for a word. Also the pump goes from a displacement pump at low speeds to a centrifugal pump (blades bend back....written in engine literature) at high speeds. Displacement pumps have the capacity to suck.....to some extent, depending on the setup and pump.

An inpeller housed inside a water pump which rotates elliptically with vanes expanding and compressing at opposite sides will suck water upwards while the motor is being flushed ON in a barrel or on muffs.

How much water is being sucked will depend entirely on the impeller and liner condition, how clean are the lower leg's external and internal water screens and above all How Clean is the Internal vertical water passage located in middle of the screen's housing and the lower water pump case into which water fills the impeller's housing to be pumped upward through the tall water pick up tube.
