Bad as Milton was, I feel like it was better than expected. If power out is your only problem, you fared great. Location means all the difference, except when a hurricane spawns tornados. I was surprised about tornadoes; I did not know that was a thing.
Yeah, there had been predictions of 15 foot high tidal surge, but that didn't happen. Surprised a lot of folks in a positive way. I heard one news report that there were 76? tornado warnings issued during the storm. Scary.

On the ground it gets flooded, on the roof it gets blown away? Has to be outdoors.
One reason we would never live in Florida....winds don't bother us but flooding certainly does. Years back my folks lived in Florida but had there home built on stilts with the garage under the house. Worked great, never any serious damage by winds ( concrete construction) and flood waters just made a mess but no real serious losses. However insurance is terribly expensive ! Life is a gamble so consider where you live carefully !!

I was one who considered carefully. We're 10 miles from the Gulf and 100 feet above sea level. No floods for me, thanks. If I lived in a concrete home, I'd never evacuate.

As far as I can tell, there are no places in the US which are completely immune from the hazards of Mother Nature. Heat, cold, blizzards, floods, hurricanes, tornadoes🌪️, torrential rain, earthquakes, volcanoes, extreme fog and so on. I've lived in, been close to, or affected by all of those places.

Then there's the Yellowstone caldera. If that puppy blows, we're all cooked! So, I guess it's "pick your poison" and hope for the best.

A few decades back, I'd hoped to retire in a little house on Lake Norman in NC. Recently, I've seen video of a little house floating down Lake Norman because of the flooding caused by Hurricane Helene.

I remember things like that from the floods here in Nashville. "Some had flooding" - three simple words, but water does some amazing damage.
