Tap Alpha Gen 2 Bell Housing

I had to drill out the shift cable fitting in the bell housing and now I need to re-tap the threads. I know the tap is 1/4" 18 NPS. Does it matter which side I tap from - either the transom side or the outdrive side? Is there a specific length tap I need?

transom side is the easiest , the tap MUST be a straight tap ,not a pipe thread type, and you tap all the way thru
