Tahoe Spare Tire Mount?

Re: Tahoe Spare Tire Mount?

I pick up my Q5i SF this week, on the stock trailer with the ST215/75R14 tires, and am looking to get a spare as well. Is the stock trailer wheel a 5.5inch or 6inch wide rim? I was looking at the 6 inch rim, but the link provided by dmtalon goes to a 5.5 inch wide rim. Anyone know for sure?

First post! Haven't even taken delivery of the boat yet...

Re: Tahoe Spare Tire Mount?

I do see that they changed the design now so the pressure point spot from the weight of the tire has an extra brace on it.

jkust, what a horrible situation. Sorry your spare mount failed, and that anyone would have to deal with that.

So, this makes me a bit nervous. I purchased a spare tire mount identical to the one I had on my last boat, except the manufacturer has added an extra member from the mounting plate to the support arm (too coincidental to your description to be ignored which makes me think I'm putting on the same mount). I've just finished painting the mount to match the trailer, but I have yet to install it on the trailer.

Is that it? I had that older design on my old boat trailer for 12 years without issue. The spare for that boat's trailer was smaller (lighter) - a ST175/80R13. As I said, I'm about to install the same mount, but with the new design on my new trailer with its ST215/75r14 larger and heavier tire and wheel. At this point, I guess I'll inspect it at every stop for some time. You stated it was practically new, about how many miles had you logged prior to it failing? Was the failed part the new or old design? What size spare was mounted?

Sorry for all the questions, but a failure of the type you experienced is big bad news. I've had flats over the years, but can't imagine having to deal with what you describe.

Re: Tahoe Spare Tire Mount?

Just to let you guys know I bought a Reese 7-5 adapter for my boat...plugged it in...and it worked fine without any issues.

Also I bought a spare tire mount from the local dealer here. The mount if a Fulton and I bought a tire and rim from a tractor supply place. I will mount them when I have some time and let you all know how it goes...and will post some pics as well.

Ok here are the pics of the Fulton spare tire mount ($50 and fits trailers 3" wide to 4" deep), build quality seems pretty stout. The trailer I have has a beam that is 4" high and 2" wide and I mounted it as far to the front as possible on the rail. I picked up a spare tire and rim from the tractor supply and it was about $100(It is a standard 5 lug 4 1/2 " bolt pattern). The size is 180/75 R13 and it is a RADIAL trailer tire. I am not too worried about the white rim as I will have a spare tire cover over it soon.

The spare tire holder requires 15-20 lbs.-ft of torque (I did 20 lbs. just to be on the safe side)on the brackets and I also put the same on the spare tire lugs. The welds look pretty good as well so i am happy with it and am glad we will not be without a spare anymore! I do however NEED to get my toolbox in order to take with us to include a torque wrench for the event of a tire failure.

Last and another IMPORTANT thing with the spare is to secure it to the spare tire mount to A) Keep people from stealing it and B) Most importantly in case it gets loos it will not fall off and cause an accident!!!

Thant is all for now guys!

Re: Tahoe Spare Tire Mount?

Just as an FYI... something I've discovered is that the spare tire even with the small lift with the holder is the LOW spot and will rub. I can't get out of my driveway w/o hitting it. In fact scratched a hole in my spare cover the first day I put it on pulling the boat out <sigh>

Makes me wonder if it would fit further back closer to the pivot of the actual tire.

Right so don't kid yourself. If that tire mount breaks at highway speeds I can tell you that an inch thick cable holding the tire to the trailer will snap as though it was a piece of string. First hand and you will be shocked that all of your safety equipment, nearly new and the best money could buy, fails. Your spare tire holder has the exact same flaw as my version that broke clean off at the weld at 65mph. The newest design has fixed the flaw with an additional brace and better material due to so many spare tires breaking off. The manufacturer of my particular spare tire holder that was already substantially more robust than your version paid me out for my trailer damages admitting what happened to me has happened to several others. My advice to others is to simply peak your head between the hull and the holder and view the back side of the spare holder for a cracked weld as part of your pre trip visual.
