I have an older v4 90 degree motor evinrude 88 hp. Does anyone know how many poles the alternator has. I installed a tachometer and I need to know how many poles to set it it to. example i set it to 2 poles and the engine runs wide open at 6700 rmps. I think its wrong. I am also curious to know what the idleing rpm should be.

Re: Tackometer

You will need a "universal" tachometer with a setting of 6p.

(12 poles is set to 6 pulse)

Re: Tackometer

With the setting that Zeke provided, and running on a flushette, set the idel to 1000 rpm for a 20" shaft model and 1200 rpm for a 25" shaft model. The rpms will drop to a normal idle when in the water.
