1987 johnson 225 HP V6 My tachometer is not working in the dashboard removed it brought it directly to the engine wired it up it does not work off of the gray sending unit wire when I touch it to the yellow wires either one yellow or yellow with stripe tachometer reads properly is my issue in the stater or the rectifier Thank you for any help ( Beat you there )

Does the engine charge? If so, connect it to one of the yellow wires and be done with it. If not, maybe you need a new voltage regulator.

Leaving it connected to one of the yellow wires isn't going to hurt anything that's what I'm worried about yes it charges

Tachometers run off stator pulses. The yellow wires come from under the flywheel and carry those stator pulses (a form of AV voltage) to the VR.

You might put a voltmeter on the battery terminals when the engine is running and charging. Check for AC voltage at the battery. If you see some, the voltage regulator is partially bad.

Might check to see if you have 12v on the purple wire at rectifier with key on. This turns on the rectifier and output to grey wire
