tachometer question

I have a 4 cyl omc inboard, my tach is a us marine, on the back of the tach it has 1-4 postions, its set on 2 is that the right one for a 4 cyl engine? or does it go by the number of poles on the alternator?

pos. 2 is correct for 4 cylinder 4 stroke
it is not connected to the alternator
tach runs off ignition
