Re: Tach

The tach runs off of the battery charging system on your mtr and you may have probs there. Check all the wiring, especially the gray wire coming from the mtr.

Re: Tach

I will also have problems if the battery gets too low on charge.

Re: Tach

Ok all the wires are brand new but not coming from the motor could the power pack be the problem like going bad because like I said all was working fine yesterday just asking anything else I can check seems like battery is fully charged also boat starts with np plus allother device's are working

Re: Tach

If you take the cover off the engine and move the gray wire from the terminal block (should be bridged to the yellow/gray wire from the rectifier) to the yellow rectifier terminal screw and the tach starts working then one side of the rectifier is blown. Don't run it like this for long or you'll need a new tach too.

You didn't say year or model so that's my best guess.

Sorry I have a 200TXL77C so that will be my best bet to test this ?? Also could something like that just blow?

Bad rectifier or bad tach hook in a amp gauge to see if rectifier is charging the battery

Re: Tach

You could do a real simple visual test- pull it off to see if any of the non-dialectric gel is pitted underneath.

Mine was intermittent. Once the motor was at peak temp for a while it would start to act up again. I started having all sorts of strange problems after a while as the battery started to drain - not just with the tach, but also engine problems.

I replaced the rectifier - not much better. I put the battery on the charger for a day then took it back out and haven't had an issue since and I've had it out numerous times for a total of about 30+ hours.

Here's my thread on it with excellent information from Joe Reeves.

Re: Tach

So this is leaning to a bad rectifier correct ? Guess I have to do the test to make sure 100% also with a bad one will it cause sluggish running like the motor is starving for fuel or this would be another problem ? Don't want to over post on the tread just mind blowing if this was all new wires and tach all was working fine than just stops guess i have to test that rectifier that could be the only problem for this correct? also when i did take the boat out today i did notice sluggish running would the rectifier cause that also?

Re: Tach

Go to either your manual or to cdielectronictroubleshooting and it will tell you how to do this procedure the cdi site is awesome for trouble shooting

Re: Tach

Ok so that would be the first thing to do is test the rectifier correct

Re: Tach

Do a search for rectifier test. I just replaced mine and found the test on here. I also saw a You-Tube video on how to make one from parts from radio shack. Cost me 4 bucks and worked. Charging system and Tach both started working. I went ahead and ordered the OEM anyway. Just did not trust it but it was worth the 4 bucks for a test one.
