I recently bought a Bay boat with a 1995 johnson 130hp motor wit ha 20" shaft . after 4 times the lower unit smoked. brought it down to a dealer and they said that they used a different lower unit then the typical v4 loopers. I.E. 120\130\140 hp models.
this one has a v6 case with the v4 input shaft and large output shaft like the v6. now my question is i simply cannot afford a remanufactored one. that gonna get me for almost 2 grand. so can I get a v6 lower unit from about the same year and change the 20" input shaft from my old one or can I just get a lower unit from another v4 in aabout the same year and bolt it right up? and does anyone know the gear ratios for the v4 and v6 lower units in these years. any help would be great !! or any advice on what I should do would be extremly helpful !!!!

Re: 1995 johnson 130hp lower unit failure

Describe "smoked".

If the case, driveshaft and propshaft are still OK then rebuild that one.

The V4, V6 and V8 driveshafts all have the same upper splines. Any complete 20" late model V4 lower unit will bolt up as will any V6 or V8. If you use the standard V4 case you will need a prop.

If you indeed do need a complete lower check out the prices here on iboats. There are many places that have used units as well such as Superior Marine (800-338-9281).

Good luck!
