1979 evinrude 55975 55 hp evinrude.

Just wonder ing got a tach the other day it has 4 cyl, 6 cyl, 8 cyl, and 12 pole alternator. For this engine which is it?

Thanks It was set to 12 pole and the dern thing kept saying I was WOT @ 3400 rpms. This is a new one and I was like there is no way. Thanks Just out of curious why the 6 cyl when its a only got 2?

That's why I don't recognize the settings.

Most tachs are marked in poles or pulses. A 12 pole alternator has 6 pulses per revolution. 10 poles = 5 pulses, etc. Your 50 should be 12 poles or 6 pulses.
EDIT: Better check that last statement. It might be 10/5.

Not to hijack this thread but I have a question.

When you mention alternator is that the same as a stator in the OMC's or is that different?

Bonz.... The stator is the beginning of the alternating charging system.

Da83moon.... The OMC (Evin/John) engine alternating systems emit six (6) pulses of which the tachometer operates upon, hence the six (6) settings. This pertains to engines with any number of cylinders.
