tach is reading high at start-up

I started the boat in the driveway today since it hasn't been run in awhile. All was going well till I noticed the tach was reading 5,000 rpm's at idle. If I increase the engine speed it would climb. Obviously the engine isn't running that fast. I was wondering if anyone else had this problem??

If you didn't have this problem before the tach could be bad.
