sync lower unit an shifter

Ok I change the water pump on my 2002 ,125 elpto mercury I put the lower unit back in an now my gear shift control is out of sync with lower end ,I stared it up an it was in forward gear how do you sync lower end an your gear shifter

Remove the lower unit again. Put them both in neutral (prop free spinning), then reinstall the lower unit.
