New here folks and appreciate any help. I have a 2000 Cobalt with a Volvo SX-M outdrive. Well, cracked the lower gear housing and it's not weldable. The guy I took it to is looking for a housing with a certain number 3817737. Not sure if that is a casting number or what but haven't had any luck. I called a small shop that was going out of business a couple hundred miles away and all he wanted to know was what type of engine ie.. 4 cylinder, v-8. Told him it was a 350 v-8 and he said he didn't have anything. I have attached some pics of the tags on my outdrive. The original motor and lower gear housing have been changed in the past. Hope these help and I'll try to answer any questions you guys might have. Thanks.

Near as I can tell the housing part # is 3855363 and there out ther just depends on how much you want to spend, type that part # in your search and you'll see them. Welcome Aboard

You may want to consider getting a remanufactured drive and returning yours back for some core value. I've had good luck with boatwrench.com. The engine question determines the drive ratio. You'll need to get a drive with the same ratio.

Check ebay. You can generally find several rebuilt and used units that should fix your problem.

Thanks, I have seen them but it seems like they are selling gears and everything. All I need is the housing. I don't think the items I have found that are about $3200 and weigh over 300lbs. are just the lower gear housing. Shouldn't say I don't think but more like hard to believe.

I don't know where your located but I have found that a marine salvage yard is a good place to start. Find a lower unit that's locked up or bent shaft or something , get it as cheap as you can then strip it down as long as the housing you need is not damaged

well, are you going to be able to set up the gears in the new housing yourself? if you've done differentials and have a Volvo manual and whatever tools you will need, maybe OK but for us typical do it yourselfers that's not practical if you want a good outcome. I would try to get a good rebuilt uint from a local shop with a warrantee. Then sell off your old one with the gears intact, the parts are worth something.
No insurance?

I have a guy that will do the work. He has called around and no one within a couple hundred miles has it. Nah, no insurance. Thanks for the response.

Eastern Washington, so the closest would probably be Seattle or Portland so looking at a one or 2 day trip. Not sure about buying something like that sight unseen. My boat guy and i have called around trying to find a casing with no luck. Thanks for the response.
