2001 Volvo Penta SX-M 3868896

Just putting the outdrive back together after replacing my bellows and gimbal bearing. The Volvo Penta shop manual does not specify any sort of seal or gasket maker between the machined metal face of the pivot housing and the machined metal face of the upper gear housing. It mentions greasing the tapered end of the u joint bearing carrier - does that make a seal with the bellow?

Im curious as to what makes a seal to keep water out of my bellows with no gasket specified. Thanks in advance.

The nose of the bearing carrier #9 pushes into the bellows. Yes grease is a very good idea.

Something like Evinrude triple guard grease works well; it’s a thick water proof grease that works well in this application.
