I now have a 1986 Johnny 48SPL and a CMC 130 PT&T on my Boston Whaler Striper 15, RED SKY. The engine runs great but the CMC leaks down when trimmed on plane, so I have to keep tweaking it up to maintain good trim.

I have just bought (on eBay) a 1988 Johnny 60 VRO with PT&T, plus all controls, oil tank, fuel tank, harness and even a trim guage. Yes, I think I got a deal.

I want to swap the whole works onto RED SKY.

Haven't done this task before. I think I klnow what to do and how to do it.

Any cautions or yabuts I should know about?

Re: Swapping Johnnys.

JB....can't ya' use the the controls for the 48 for the 60. Both are the same set up......oops.....the 60 has TNT built in. The controls for the 60 likely has the trim switch in the control handle......OK..glad that's straightened out. At least you can use the control cables from the 48. Should work on the 60.

Engine set up...I would set the anti-cav plate at least 1" above the keel. Will give you better performance. You may also have to play with the prop pitch if you don't get WOT rpms.

Should be a straight forward swap out. Don't know the bolt pattern for the CMC but you may end up drilling new holes if they don't match up. Don't forget to plug up the old holes.

One other thought, when the CMC unit was mounted, was the steering cable changed out also to prevent a sharp bend at the engine steering tube? Bolting the 60 up may leave you with a little left over steering cable....maybe a foot worth. Not really that much to worry about....let it sag somewhere out of the road.

You do have or have access to a hoist I hope??

And most certainly run 50:1 in the tank until the VRO operation is verified. Nice motor....

Yeah.....what Rick said....d:)

EDIT: Shoot, Rick got the gray cells working.....do make sure the alarms for the engine are working when they should especially the "NO OIL" alarm and overheat alarm.

Re: Swapping Johnnys.

Thanks, guys. :)

Don't have an engine hoist, but do have a steel beam in the garage and several come-alongs. Also have a front loader on my tractor that is good for 700#. I have used that with a chain to carry engines about.

I have looked over the steering cable and guess it will add only a couple of inches of "slack".

I have to check the bolt pattern for the CMC unit against the OMC pattern. Hope the OMC pattern doesn't want me to use lag bolts. If that is the case I will get one of those CMC 4" setback plates like the dealer used on my 1980 Montauk to mount the Suzi DF70. No lag bolts.

The set back might be a good idea anyways JB. Good way to eek out that little extra from the engine. And, will make a very large different in performance of the whole rig. Just ask DJ.
