Re: Suzuki Outboard "Warranty Nightmare"

Steelie, I also would like to know where you bought your DF70 and where you got it serviced. Perhaps this is a dealer/customer issue and your issues with Suzuki are secondary.Bad dealers don't make good customers for any manufacturer.

Re: Suzuki Outboard "Warranty Nightmare"

Bundy, I purchased the boat and motor new from a dealer in Oregon. I made several phone calls to Suzuki customer service at the "Dealers Request" trying to get things moving. I was told specifically who to ask for in cust service and extension numbers. My problems were Suzuki corporation and the Suzuki area service rep. I was not suppose to contact the area service rep. However, I called the dealer one morning early enough that management was not there yet. I talked to the technician. He said he was furious at Suzuki over the way they handle warranty issues and gave me the area reps cellphone number. When I called the area rep he was very upset. Not about my lack of service, but that I had somehow gotten his phone number. I left two messages on his voice mail later asking the status of my warranty claim, to which he never did reply.

Re: Suzuki Outboard "Warranty Nightmare"

To Steelie,Rtice, and anyone concerned about Suzuki outboard motors,
There are good and bad dealers for all products, including Suzuki. Outboard companys have a problem with signing on dealers with no experience or capital. I have been a Suzuki dealer for 19 years and have complained about them not training new dealers, that the customer comes first. That is Suzuki's fault, but it sounds like most of the problem you had, could have been solved by the dealer. He could have fixed your motor by taking the part from another motor or called me about parts. There are only two things a dealer can offer. "Price and service" It sounds like you only got price and not service. Suzuki's phone # is 714-996-7040 and mine is 252-447-2277. If I can help please call I stock $200,000.00 worth of Suzuki parts. There are many good dealers that stock parts, but there are many little dealers that do not. He sold it and should have fixed it somehow.

Re: Suzuki Outboard "Warranty Nightmare"

Seems like Suzuki has heard the word about this site and issue!! Some positive notes towards the end. Maybe they will be more receptive to warranty claims after reading this and understanding the bad exposure they are getting. What a wonderful site - Thanks iboats and all the great contributors. Without this we would be all just single voices.

Liam

Re: Suzuki Outboard "Warranty Nightmare"

Thanks Walsh Marine. I will give you a call. My dealer is kind of put off by me because of me causeing him to loose the service award. My situation is much different as my engine was fixed in record time with a new powerhead. Didn't really like the idea of haveing to have the powerhead replaced after the 2nd day from new but thats how the chips fell. I requested a new engine but they said that never happens. Now my problems is when I inquired about what Suzuki found to be the problem with the piston on the 225 there responce was " Cold Seizure" and they would cover it this time. Now why would they say that????This was from my dealer and he does service work but came from where ever the blowen powerhead was sent. He did have the service award also that year so he must be doing something right. Now I have a 6 year warrenty and they are insinuating they wont cover another piston problem without a deep investagation. The way I see it they missed a key part to the initial investagation of the fail happened 2 hrs into a run. Engine was no way cold and if it was it was from overcooling and thats not likely. Not very reassuring. I requested the area rep call me on this thru my dealer and never did. Then I requested it again in a survey Suzuki sent me. The survey ??? were abiut 90% about the color and graphics. I could give a crap about the color I just want the thing to run and last a few 1000 hrs. I did fill out my concerns in the comments and got a call back on them but they only addressed the low speed vibration and idle problems. They would not go into the engine problem from b4 because it was a closed case. I requested a return call again from the rep. Nevr got it. This call came form someone in Ca and all they did was authrize .5 hrs warrenty to check out the vibration from another dealer. I must admit I have not tried to contact Suzuki again and its been over a year. I figured why, if I couldn't get a call from them when my 11k engine blew then why would they want to talk now. Thanks again to the Suzuki dealers trying to make things right for the others with cam problems. I would much rather brag about how good my engine and service is then to ***** about it.

Re: Suzuki Outboard "Warranty Nightmare"

Walsh Marine, Thank you for your response regarding Suzuki Warranty/Dealer Problems. I purchased this DF70 because I had read that these were the number 1 rated 4 strokes by Consumers Report. I can say that this is a very fine engine. The best I've ever owned. My problem started at 68.4 hours when the engine returned to idle and the oil light came on. The dealer originally found the problem to be a bad oil sending unit. He ordered it(3weeks to get it and 1 week to install). This did not fix it. After they talked with the Suzuki Rep., they said it was a defective camshaft causing the oil pump to stop operating. I then asked for a new motor, it had been operated about 15 minutes to get back to the landing without oil pressure. He(dealer) said Suzuki had said no. We got into a very heated discussion, he told me to call Suzuki and proceded to hang up on me. I called Suzuki, talked with a Rep. named Damion Riddle. He said no new motor, but would get a delivery date on a new camshaft from the factory. Three weeks later they had a new camshaft sent from Japan. Damion said they had shipped a different P/N camshaft. I asked him why the different P/N, he said he didn't know why. I then asked if there had been any other failures of this type. He said not that he knew of. The camshaft was sent to the dealer, and he installed it. This process took 3 months. That is a half season where I live. Your certainly right about these small dealers. If he would have offered me a boat to use, this could have been avoided. My gripe now is Suzuki said they would extend my 6 year warranty by 3 months. I sent a registered letter to Damion Riddle in Brea Ca. on Jan. 18 requesting he honor the 3 month warranty extension he had promised me. I also asked for them to explain the cause of failure and provide a reasonable explanation that their repair had fixed the problem. If they couldn't do this, I asked for a reasonable offer to buy the motor back. I want to regain some confidence in this motor. I'm still waiting to hear from them. On these message boards, we've found 4 owners with the very same problem. This failure has occurred on a 1999, 2000, and on my 2001. I do not know what year engine Maui girl has(that's the fourth failure). On the 1999 failure which occurred in the UK, the dealer told the owner it was a bad batch of camshafts. I feel being it has happened to 3 different production year motors that this may not be the cause of the problem. Have you heard of any camshaft failures on the DF60/70 motors? Thank you again for your response. I will keep your phone number in my Suzuki records if I have any parts problems in the future. Can you recommend a reputable dealer in Minnesota or NW Wisc? rtice.

Re: Suzuki Outboard "Warranty Nightmare"

I wonder what the part number is for the camshaft on the Evenrude equivalent to our DF70's. Is it the exact same part? My money says, yes.
My Two Suzuki Motors are as follows:
MODEL #'S DF70TLY'S
MODEL YEAR 2000
SERIAL #'S 07001F 032180, 07001F 032183
CONTROL SEQUENCE #'S 502017381, 502017365
