Re: SUV's out of control

Fifteen years ago when I was single and had money to burn, I had a '85 Porsche 944. That puppy would handle like it was on rails... but I lost control one afternoon. I was trying to go 90 on a 35 mph curve, caught a little sand and well, made quite a mess out of my pretty red "chick magnet". People's driving habits change with the vehicle they're driving.

As for deer, those little critters tremble when the ground starts rumbling as my 3 1/2 ton truck aproaches them... anticipating their certain death, they disappear faster than a Cinnabon in Rosie O'Donnel's short, fat, greasy fingers.

JB - You're "dead-ON" on your description of Stangs, etc! :D

Haw!! DJohns.

I'll bet I've driven a bunch of 'stangs since you last drove a Miata, S2000 or (bow your head) 550 Spyder. Not that the Spyder did James Dean any good :(

I think "pony" cars have come a long way, but have a long way to go. :)

Now. How did we get from SUVs to 550 Spyders? That wasn't even close to an SUV. :)

Re: SUV's out of control

I think what the problem here is every one of us on this board that owns an SUV has it for about the same reason. It pulls my boat and hauls everyone I want to carry. We may or may not use it on weekdays to go to work or wherever but we do use it on weekends. Either way comfort regardless of how we use it is importiant especially those of us taking an hour or more to get to the ramp (15 min from hook up to launch for me :D ). What I thin is at point here from the get go is those people that have them just for looks. A car or minivan would better suit why they have the vehicle but they want the SUV for looks. It is those people raised on rice burners and MTV that have problems driving a real vehicle. I grew up driving tractors and trucks on the farm and am one of those boys that have driven the tractor on the paved road like it was a car. If it has wheels, tracks or floats I can drive it been doing it all my life and am more than prepared to understand the handling and other things that come with an SUV versus a "sports" car. It means i drive mine safely and responsibly. Others who have never driven anything more than a volvo should not drive an SUV untill they have had the chance to be trained on how they respond. If you can't take my word hang around the local wal-mart. Watch how people park. Those if us used to an SUV pull right into the parking spot (designed for smaller cars mind you) just fine those that need training take thier time and usually have to back out and straighten at least once. An SUV is not for everyone but they do serve a purpous and the comfort is nice too.

Worked a head-on fatality on Thanksgiving 1999. The guy in the Taurus didn't fare as well as the lady in the customized lift-equipped van. The sheer weight of her vehicle transferred more energy to the other vehicle that his did to hers. The cause, he fell asleep and woke up at the last second. My point, every fatality or major collision I worked, the larger vehicle fared better. I could see that SUV's are more likely to use control because of higher center of gravity and excessive speeds that are now possible. I would rather my wife drove an SUV but she prefers a Camry. Oh Well my .02.....

Moose, I had the 924 Turbo, not the slant-4 924 built by Audi, but the Porsche-Stuttgart built turbocar. Silver, mint condition, I was 21 at the time. Bought it from an old guy. Sold it before I could destroy it, I knew I would have. Fast car.

The S2000 now that's a sports car! (Affordable has to fit into the formula to classify) Detroit just doesn't make any sports cars like the rest of the world. Corvette would be about the closest but it's a little too expensive, more of a cheap supercar.

Scoop, if that lady in the freak accident had been driving an SUV she would have gone THROUGH the wall and killed all the kids in the classroom!! JUST KIDDING!!!

Has anyone seen the new "high performance RVs"? I can't remember what they are called but they're in production and look like the next logical upgrade from the Navigator. With the way everyone is so busy running around these days you just HAVE to cook breakfast in the car while taking the dog to the salon!
