While I'm thinking about it, a suggestion for all you guys that really know your stuff to help those like me that don't and don't have money to pay someone to do the simple things but want to keep a boat for the kids, how difficult would it be to create some short video demonstrations for the basics in maintenance? Could use you tube and just have a link in the forum sorted by type of motor/drive. I know there would be lots of variables like different engines, motors, and designs, but I think it would be unique to this forum and might save someone a lot of money they don't have, frustration, and fussing from the wife. Just a suggestion and thanks so much for all the input!

Re: Suggestion for maint. video library

I posted something similar not too long ago.

http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=378795

I think a few vids would cover many 'first' questions. It could turn into an extensive library.

There was a question of liability, but personally I don't thinks that's a concern.

Maybe, you'll get a better response to this than I...;)

1 Vote - Good idea!

Re: Suggestion for maint. video library

For me personally, making a video is impossible. First of all you need a video camera, hmmmmm, don't got one, not planning on getting one either. Even if I did, I would then have to find something to do a video on. I don't have everything I know about in front of me to video. BUT!!!!!!!!! if someone posts a vidio of what they are doing/asking and have it in their post, that's great.
Here is an example. http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=382029
Without it I couldn't have answered his question.
There was another poster that had a noise. He posted a clip of the sound. It was easy also. Old style flapper valve with the rubber burned off.
I have added the alignment video to the Adults only sticky, and if others come by that shows how things should be done, then they will be considered.
There are also OEM manuals posted on this site. Sad, but you have to read them, not watch them.

READ!....huh?

Friscoboater has done a great job...enjoy following that.

You don't 'really' need a video camera, just any old point and shoot with a video mode is 'good enough'.

youtube has video editing built right in...pretty slick.

I think the notion was a way to 'collect' them in one spot. Sort of like what Frisco has done by creating his own library. (he's probably the expert here)

Something as simple as "where are the drain plugs on a 4.3"...personally I viewed the grainy pics in the manual and it took me awhile to identify the parts depicted. A 25 second video of someone 'pointing' them out would have saved me a 20min of head scratchin'. Problem is....now I know... move on. ;)

Bottom line is someone would have to take the helm and go with it....

Yeah, that's kind of the problem. Everybody wants all this stuff, but nobody wants to do it for free.
Perfect example. Back in Sept. there was a big fuss about people wanting an iboats calendar, well I finally put it together and posted it in the Dockside chat forum. Both as a sticky and not a sticky. In the past 48 hours, only 8 views to the thread, and only 13 people out of all those that looked at the thread early on bought one, yet they wanted iboats to make one with discount coupons and all sorts of free stuff.
Another example, I have put up all kinds of service manual links for both Mercruiser and Volvo for the past couple of years, over 35,000 downloads and guess what, not a single thank you in the comments, NOT ONE.
So explain to me why anyone would want to go to all the work and trouble to put together video How to's, assemble them and make them available to people for free. Because I sure don't know of a reason.

Fair enough...I hear ya.

I DID buy 2 calendars and look forward to them.

I have also gratefully downloaded the manuals.

You know Don, from my perspective, you have been here so much longer than I, you seemed to me like a corner stone of information to this place. To be frank, I took your efforts for granted I guess....a name on a forum....if its any consolation I'm personally grateful for your contributions....sorry I didn't think of actually saying that.

Your right though....great idea....probably won't happen. Then again, I've put my camera on a tripod for a few things this season....well see. ;)

Take a week off, go to Fort Lauderdale. Scantily clad college girls.
The videos would sell so fast, you could retire.

Hey Don S, I really do appreciate all the work you have done on this forum! (especially the Volvo info) I couldn't even begin to guess how much money you have saved me and many others in this forum. I have learned almost everything that I know about boats from this forum. I hope you get SOMETHING for all of you time and effort you put into helping others!

Thanks Don,
