If the engine runs a non-functioning tach can mean it simply stopped counting engine revolutions. Check the connections on the tach as one of the three may have come loose. If those are fine the next test is to start the engine (in the water or on muffs), and check the battery voltage. If the voltmeter (on the dash or a handheld unit connected to the battery) is showing anything above 13 volts at about 1500 rpm then the tach is suspect. If battery voltage is 12.6 or below, the voltage rectifier/regulator may have gone south.
