Stuck float ??

Maiden voyage of the 14 foot Landau with 15hp Mariner, choked it pulled 3 times fired , died. Never fired again, wore a large blister on my pulling finger. After using the trolling motor to catch bait, son says "think the float could be stuck" so tapped the carb bowl and it fired up, ran, idled, and ran all the way to the far end of the lake. Return trip worked fine.

Last night I went out by myself, and it would run 150 yards or so and die. Started on 1 pull every time, went most of the way to same spot to fish. Before returning to the ramp I tapped the carb. bowl, but it would not run non stop unless I continued to prime the bulb.

Would the float be the problem? Or something else? I'm using 32:1 fuel but will upgrade to 50:1 this weekend. When it is running I never get much past mid throttle, as I'm not in a hurry, especially after dark. Would some Sea foam help with a sticky float? Thanks in advance, Webekin

I'm surprized it runs at all on 32:1 - 50:1 is the ratio. I would use Mercury's PowerTune to clean out the carbon and the plugs.

Prolly not the ignition system, very likely fuel.

1) Check and see if you have a water seperating filter....clean?

2) If it runs with you pumping the ball then you have a bad fuel pump, 99% likely. If you haven't done an impeller recently, may as well do them at the same time.

3) If it's new to you, may as well just remove and clean the carb/replace the needle. It will pay off in reliability.

4) check the operation of the fuel tank vent. No air in = no gas out.

Ran great last Feb. when I purchased it. The filter looks clean. The impeller was inspected last Feb. Ok. Thanks, I'll check on these items. Webekin

Hey one more thing...I've switched to non ethanol fuel which is pretty much premium around here. The new style gas cheap and carbs do not mix, especially if the engine sits for ANY length of time. For a while I was rebuilding/cleaning the many carbed engines I have multiple times. Since switching, the problems are GONE. The ethanol does attract water in the biggest way.

Addded another gallon of fuel mixed 50:1, removed the filter cleaned a small amount of black Crud, added some seafoam! Started on the 1st pull, idled ran all the way to the south end of the lake. One thing, seems to rev when I accelerate any above less than half throttle. Like it is hitting an air pocket with the prop. What is the proper setting of tilt of the lower? Webekin

Outboards used to require 16:1 and one British Model required 10:1. Great for keep Mosquitos at bay

Agreed----There is no reason for it not to run on a 32:1 mixture.----Will smoke more due to the oil burning off.----It will also last for many more hrs at 32:1 then 50:1 mix.

I have the owners manual, 32:1 breakin, then 50:1 there after. Need guidance on the proper positioning of the lower, I will get a picture to verify that the leg is long enough for the boat. Webekin
