My carpenter just called me and said he got one of the stringers cut out but the wood split right in two because it was to weak. He was using regular salt treated wood from a home supply store and its just not strong enough. Can anyone tell me what type of wood I need to use for this? I had read some where to use douglas fur but I didn't think that was required. Is there any comparable wood I can use? I need this project done in 2 weeks but douglas fur is a week wait to order the stuff. Would oak or poplar be strong enough for this job?

The plywood laminated is quite strong....actually stronger on the lateral forces than a similar dimension doug fir board.

I used doug fir treated with copper arsenic as a mold and fungus prevention and bugs won't eat the stuff......dried for almost 2 years. The stuff was rock hard, even dulled a saw blade. Not sure it's available anymore, as there was concern about it leeching into the soil when used on decks around the house. If I didn't have it left over from a project and super dry, I would have used the plywood laminated.

So bondo was being serious? I dont mean to question everyone but when I read plywood I thought he was just being a jerk making fun of me or something. If I did try to do it with plywood how would I get a peice 12.5 feet long

One thing that just clicked with me. The motor has to bolt in directly to the stringers from the top down and it seems to me like plywood wouldn't be able to hold the motor in with the bolts just running through a bunch of layers of wood?

Another case of not showing pics for the problem ..

Your not going to lag bolt into vertically mounted plywood stringers.

How wide was your stringers before ? 3" ?

You have an Inboard right .. ?

This Might be a case of stringers using lumber and not ply..

Got pics please.

Ayuh,... Lag bolts really don't care which way the grain or layers are runnin'...

If yer that concerned about it,...
Drill the holes Oversized, 'n fill the void with thickened epoxy, 'n redrill for size...

these are the only useful pics I took before ripping it all out. They where 2x6 stringers in the middle with 1x6 along the sides. If laminate plywood is the a good option I would definitely prefer that considering my time crunch.

Plywood is perfectly acceptable as engine mounts. I prefer to mount the engine to them using aluminum L-brackets. Side bolt the brackets to the wood and use through bolts or studs to attach the engine mounts. Works good...and you never have to worry about yanking the lagg bolts out. (seal all your bolt holes, of course)
