Strange engine sound need help

Hello all !

i got a strange engine sound that i cant locate at all. it first started last year when i was taking the boat up and was gonna flush it so i connected a hose to engine flush and then it started. and this year when i was gonna drive its still there. if i remove the serpentinebelt it dissapear dunno what it can be also do u guys think the serp belt is to small?

hm i think its the serpbelt not the pulleys atleast i cannot see it when im live at the boat. any i deas on the metall sound ?

Yep that clicking is in perfect timing with the belt wobble. Maybe try another belt...

I agree that it appears to be belt related. They are not supposed to walk back and forth in the pulleys. Is that the original belt?

When you removed the belt and the noise disappeared, did you rotate any/all the pulleys by hand to see if the noise was associated with one of them? Not sure you can rotate the raw water pump by hand but if so, only do it in the direction of its normal rotation.

Also, I suspect the belt looks too narrow (small) due to it wearing on the edges making it narrower. Do you have a lot of belt dust in the bay around the same plane as the belt?

It may be that one of your pulleys is bent and that is causing both the noise and wear on belt due to its wobble.

That belt is doing the electric slide lol.Looks like you might have a bad bearing in one of your accessories, bent pulley or bent bracket.

Yes i tried that but no noice that i could hear. Is it worth to test change belt and see? Yepp alot of belt dust see pic:

There is a bad bearing or bent shaft somewhere in this train. While you can try a new belt, I suspect that it will ‘fill the void’ and not walk back and forth because it has not worn narrower yet. I.e., it may appear its fixed since do not see it walking back and forth.

I assume you do not have a dial indicator (a type of measuring device) so with a metal ruler or a level to use as a ‘straight edge’ place it across each pully that you can and see is it looks square: ie when viewing from the top, and straight edge held horizontally across the pully (middle of straight edge close to the middle of pulley) does the straight edge look to be cocked a little? See pic to get an understanding of what I am trying to convey.


It my not show you a smoking gun (ie all looks ok) but that does not mean it is. You definitely have an issue IMHO with one (or more) of the pulleys.

And you will be able to solve it, just keep at it and keep telling us what you find and asking what’s next. That is what this forum is for

Hi! thx for the help. im gonna try that and see what i can find, possible to see if the pulley is doing this when engine on? if i look very closely? i changed 1 pulley that i thought made the noise but nothing so i guess its someone on the lower side. gonna test now in the weekend

With the engine running you may be able to see a wobbling pully (do not use the straight edge with it running!). If you do, that is it!

Hmm dont understand What u mean use straight Edge ?

A good metal ruler is a ‘straight edge’. If you hold the ruler at the ends, it can be bent one way but not the other, see mock up. The edge of the ruler is straight and provides a nice straight line you can use.

hmm im maybe stupid but the ruler what is that? is that the pulley that tightens the belt ?

Anders, i am assuming you are not teasing me so i will answer and provide a follow up comment. The straight edge is not part of the boat but rather a metal ruler you hopully have in your tool box. here is a picutre of one:


The troubleshooting you need to do takes a certain level of mechanical aptitude. I believe that anyone that chimes in on these 'need help' forums assumes the requester has that. I am willing to walk folks thru a process as it is difficult to communicate when not standing side by side looking at the problem. But in this case you may be better off taking this into a shop. If you want to continue to give it a go, I will still try to help but may be best over the phone. PM me if so desired. Thanks.
