Stereo wiring

I had two batteries somehow linked together with the stereo somehow wired into the battery. After a mechanic seeing how it was done he was worried about it being a hazard. He said that I could run off a single battery if I wanted. Today I removed all the shoddy wiring the extra cheap battery but now my stereo isn't wired in and I'm not sure how to do it. Any suggestions

Re: Stereo wiring

Red and yellow wires go to positive. Black goes to ground, the rest are all speaker wires (YES granted there are dimmer, power antenna, remote amp turn on....ect on higher end stereos) but you will be get a working stereo with hooking up those 3. Granted there are no blown fuses.
I prefer a dual battery setup myself.

Re: Stereo wiring

Yeah I think I do too. I have a switch off/1/2/all. But I'm confused on how to wire it all together safely. I'm going to make a diagram of what I got minus the stereo hopefully someone can help off that. Unfortunately stereo wires are both blue

Re: Stereo wiring

Here is a wiring diagram I did for another member. Second page show proper 2 battery wiring for a battery switch like you have. First page will give you a good idea of how things get wired.

Your red trim motor wire should go to the common terminal of the battery switch.

Wiring the stereo has to come from the helm fuse panel.
What you need to do is find the wires coming out of the stereo and getting the colors there. Both blue wires are probably what was added on to the stereo to reach the battery.

Re: Stereo wiring

That is just information about the switch.
It's good for voltages between 6 and 32 Volts DC, and the ignition protected means it's sealed and can be used in the bilge area of a boat and will not blow you up.

Re: Stereo wiring

Well the stereo doesn't work yet. I tried various ways with the same luck. I was told tht the yellow wire was the memory wire and to run that directly to the battery while connecting the red wire to the battery switch , then I tried connecting both red and yellow directly to the battery and that didn't work either. I changed out the fuse on fhe radio as well. I think the radio itself is shot, maybe got wet at the mechanics.

Re: Stereo wiring

The yellow memory wire does need to go directly to a battery so it will remember your stations. The red wire is for power to the stereo, but you also need a ground wire (black) going to the negative bus bar or for your testing to the negative terminal of the battery.
The red and yellow wires go to the positive terminal of the battery for testing.

Re: Stereo wiring

Finally I got the radio to work,y running everything directly into the battery then when I connect the yellow wire to the battery and the red wire to the House battery connection at the switch (#2) the radio works, as it should, BUT when I move the switch to #1 (my starter battery) the radio still works shouldnt the battery only work when the switch is on #2 or Both?

Re: Stereo wiring

With a 1-2-Both battery, you are only choosing which battery turns everything on. Not house or starting off separate batteries.

Look at the second page of the wiring diagram I posted above.
