Re: Steps to remove drive shaft from 1999 v6 lower unit

I have been trying the method with the vise grip and neither of the drive shafts are budging. I have a vise clamp that was a cheapy and it is getting pretty beat up in the process with no progress on the d/s. any ideas except buying a better quality vise grip? Thanks

the keeper is .030 thick spring steel......the keeper system is strong...and heavy spring pressure holding it on the UDS.

with three tab retainers holding tight in a wide groove machined into the hardened DS...

the retainer can spin all it wants but it wont move axialy easily!!!

to get it off, i would think you would have to shoe horn a thin screw driver tipped type of tool in under the bent in spring tabs...and PRY the thing off....

since is is bascially a flat piece of spring steel rolled into a circle , it has a slot down its length..which would allow it give to OPEN up...

but NOT easily!!

it looks like it would GO ON easily....a tap of a hammer in line and it snaps on...but coming off!!!

not fun..easpecially down inside the LOWER DS!!!

which is also held by a heavy walled roll pin!!!

vise grops are not the tool to use!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

is my guess

Id use a slide hammer

you will have to destroy the roll pin or snap the bent in ears off....to get the DS's apart is my guess

you are best sevred just dissasembling the LU the proper way....

like a few have said I wonder how much trouble a two piece DS could have if the retainer wasnt there???

not much more than a regular one piece drive shaft

I dont know how much travel they could GO INTO EACH OTHER if the roll pin wasnt used!!!!

the roll pin sets the length of the drive shaft assembly!!

Two hard whacks with a 3 lb hammer, and they pop right out. Sometimes just one whack.
Don't know why you are having trouble.

But as I said, take it or leave it.

are you talking while it is together inside the gear case????

thus destroying the retainer and or roll pin???

I just want to know thats what you guys are doing...

and make sure we are talking about the same thing..

because normally this pinion gear is removed and the drive shafts come up and out, and you take them apart by tapping the roll pin out side ways

you are talkign about hammering the UDS upwards out of the gearcase while it is attached to the LDS??? is that right??

not that it is right or wrong at all... I just want to know if thats whats being done

I guess if you had pulled the prop bearing housing, unscrewed the pinion nut and top bearing housing, you would have had the shaft in your hand by yesterday.

Ok can you give me directions on how to remove it the normal way? And does it need to not have any lube in it? The old one has not had any lube in it in a while so everything is starting to get dried up and stuck more and more but the new one has lube in it. Thanks for all your help

I have been thinking more and more about just taking it to the guy I got it from, He said he would swap them out for an hours worth of work but it would only take him a couple minutes. I just do not want to get in over my head and end up messing a 500 dollar lower unit up. I am still open to any ideas anyone may have though!

Yes Bob, that's what i am talking about. It does not destroy the roll pin. But as Morton and I both said earlier, it does damage the spring steel reatainer, and the driveshaft will not remain locked in place anymore.

The OMC official puller that Morton posted a pic of clamps to the driveshaft down at the waterpump level, then you tighten the two screws, the ends of the screws push against the LU casing somewhere, and the driveshaft pulls out. The official OMC puller also breaks the retaining clip.

My method is quite direct, and does the exact same thing the puller does.

I learned the vise grip/hammer method from a 35 plus year outboard mechanic that needed a quick way to swap driveshafts while out on the water during races. (Outboard race fanatic).

Thanks, I am going to try taking it out with the vise clamps again and just keep trying it. Thanks for all the help.

Re: Steps to remove drive shaft from 1999 v6 lower unit

No matter how hard I try the drive shaft will not budge on either the lower units. If I can not get it I will eventually have to take it back to the guy I got it from and have him do it with a puller. What part of the ds is the best to place the pliers? at the top or down near the gear case? Thanks:confused:
