I just bought a 1986 cuddy cabin with a 140hp mercruiser. I took the boat out for the first time and it very hard to steer. Also, it dies when put in reverse. Any suggestions? When the motor in running, should I see any fluid moving in the power steering pump? Thanks!

steering may be a tight steering cable .power steering or not ,the cable still must travel freely thru the guide tube. Stall while shifting is a sign of a bad ,worn shift cable. Looking into the pump you may see movement and you may not.
A new purchase should have included a test drive for at least an hour to make sure all system operate properly. Posting an engine serial number should get you the correct manual.

Can you tell me the replacement cable for a morse e300619 180in 3581 ? I can't find it anywhere thanks
