Nearly every boat steering wheel is held to a tapered shaft on the helm with a nut under the center cap

How do you remove the center cap? Pry off or somehow unscrew? Thanks
Depends. Some are snapped on (give a squeeze), some are held in with screws. Without being there to see, I would ve guessing

I used a flywheel puller to get mine off… a lil tapping as I put pressure on the hub… it popped pretty good once released … be careful..there’s probably a key way on the hub as well… keep track of where it may fly… perhaps wrap a rag around it..

Even better - Leave the nut on loosely. Then you won't get smacked in the mouth and the key won't fly.
