steering problem????

I have just bought a 1997 Maxum 2100SR. 5.7 liter inboard Mercruiser.

When travelling without wake steering is erratic. Cannot keep straight. Fine when accelerating.

Seems like power steering overcompensates. It is sloppy. It goes one way and I compensate with turn of wheel and too far the other way. Back and forth.

It has play at all speeds as wheel can go 5 inches before contact but handles fine except slow speed?

Any ideas?

This is the 4th time in 3 days to answer this same question.
It's NORMAL. All single prop, outdrive, planing hull boats do that.
Just don't over compensate with steering changes.
