A few questions...

I have been searching through steering topics, but have not found the solution or a specific enough solution I am looking for.

I just purchased a 2009 tracker 190 with a 115 mercury (two weeks ago). The steering wheel is upside down. I called the dealer and they said nothing can be done to remedy the problem. I further checked on the teleflex steering website and in the installation instruction it says that during installation the wheel should be in a particular position so that it will be correct (upright) after install. If this is true, then couldn't you pull out the cable and re-install? And why wouldn't the dealer know this?

Secondly, the transom saver that came with the boat does not hold the motor from moving left to right while towing (I guess that is not its main purpose, but rather to absorb shock from the motor) but once I make a turn or hit a slight bump, the motor turns to one side. I have a feeling this has messed up the steering/cables because now when I turn the steering wheel(both in and out of water operation) there is a clicking/snapping/knocking noise at different points on a turn. Yesterday during operation one of the points was failry louder than usual. What is causing this noise and what can be done to fix it? Is it a "do-it-yourself" thing or do I have to take it back to the dealer?

Please help if you can! And please tell me this is something minor and simple!

Re: Steering Issues

take this boat back to the dealer and tell him you'll pick it up when they get eveything fixed, that's all you need to do.

Yep - that's an easy dealer fix whether it's a rack or rotary style steering set-up... Take it back to them and get them to take care of it...

Welcome to iboats!

Yup it appears that the boat was not properly set up. You should be headed right to the dealer about the steering wheel.

The transom saver rarely holds the motor from turning left and right.... I usually used to toss a tie town strap when it was turned to one side to hold it solid.

Many teleflex systems will click if the motor is tilted and you turn the wheel...... it is not healthy to do that and can damage the cable.

Good luck with the dealer.......

Re: Steering Issues

Thanks for all the responses!

For my knowledge and what I should expect when I take it in, do you guys know what the causes of these problems are and what they will do to repair it?

I hate going to places where they know more or think they know more than you and make you either pay $$ or wait longer for a service that shouldn't be.

When I first called them about the steering wheel, they gave me a quick "we can't do anything about that" response, like they knew more about it than me or they really didn't want to deal with it. I am hesitant to bring it back to them...
