steering frozen on 1997 jhonson

how can i free up the cables in shaft<br /><br />in the back where the motor is a piston tub ?????<br /><br />bob g

Welcome to iboats, Bob.<br />Remove the nut connecting it to the engine. On the sides of the tube that the silver shaft run thru at the motor, there are large nuts. Unscrew these,and carefully pull back the felt inserts (So they dont bind).<br />Once this is done, you should be able to pull the silver shaft out of the tube. If not,well then, there ya go...<br />You will have to drive it out,without buggering-up the threads on the end, or bending the shaft.<br />To do this, try lots of liquid wrench,WD40, or other lossener-upper.<br />Use a rubber mallet if you got one. If not, use a block of 2x4 stud to place on the end of the shaft, and drive it out.<br />Let me know how it goes,and I'll 'splain how to restore it to proper operation.

Robert,<br /><br />If the steering cable is frozen in the tilt tube(the part on the engine that the cable goes through) follow the previous advice.<br /><br />If the steering cable itself is bound up, you'll need to replace the steering cable. I WOULD NOT trust a cable that had previously corroded to the point that it locked up. You DO NOT want a steering cable to break at planing speeds. It is a recipe for disaster.

i'm at the next level of difficulty. i thought i lubed it well in the fall, nope. the steering cable is seriously locked in the tube, and my new cable is on the workbench. i've pulled, banged, and bathed it in liquidwrench for a week now, but it won't budge. the 10lb sledge has been used a few times. <br /><br />the tube is moving around tho. i left the nuts on, but loose. should i just remove the tube too? i'd like to remove the tube with the cable end in it so i can pull it apart at the workbench or replace it - well that tube supports the engine doesn't it....??<br /><br />i've got a '96 trophy with the force120. <br />am i lifting the engine off?<br /><br />cheers<br />ct
