Stator position.

Long story short, I recently purchased a 1988 50 hp Force and had to install a new stator and trigger. I got a used OEM trigger and CDI stator. The CDI stator was quite different from the stock one. Had more coils and two extra wires. I was able to make it work my plugging in wires until I got spark. Despite myself lacking in any electrical expertise, the motor starts right away and seems to be running good. Being that the stator was very different from the OEM, my question is, does the stator have to be installed in any specific orientation? If it were a matching stator I would have just put it in the exact position as the old one, as I did with the trigger. The motor runs good now but am I losing performance if it's supposed to be a certain orientation? Or should I just leave it?

The stator do not need an exact position.
It purpose is to charge the CDI box capacitors and to charge the battery through the rectifier.
An exact location is not necessary.
The length of the wires may give a location.

If you have a tachometer it will read differently if the new stator has more poles than the one it replaced......FYI.

Okay sweet thanks for the info guys! Top gun, like it will cause a change in RPM? The stator I got matched the serial number for the CDI stators, I figured it must be compatible with multiple force models.

Okay cool thanks I'll keep an eye out for that. Just ordered a tach so I could get the motor properly tuned as per the clymer manual. I've run it after tuning it by ear and seems to be running quite nicely. Thanks for the response!

I was thinking you already had a tach installed.....and changing out the stator with one that had more poles would affect it. If you ordered the right one then you should be ok....
