Stator Polarity

I am getting ready to install a stator on my Merc 90hp OB 1979 with a belt driven distributor. The stator has 2 wires on it. Do I need to get the polarity correct when I attach the wires to their respective posts on the engine?

I doesn't matter which wire goes to which terminal on the rectifier.
