and my Selco manual says put it in reverse if engine id left hand rotation.

Ayuh,......

Throw Away the Seloc manual..........

Standard Rotation Is in Fact Lefthanded,..... As viewed from the working end of the motor....

Put your drive in Forward......

So, do I go in reverse or forward?
you can go look if ya want to see which way it is too....

this pic is laying on my back, drive tilted about half way up, and the camera in front of the drive looking up...

this IS NOT a gen. 2 drive, but the idea is the same i believe. this is a pic of the shift shaft coupled together on a 1 drive. note the rotation of the coupler off to port. that's neutral. if it was further to port than it is, it'd be reverse. if it was straight ahead it would be in fwd. then, when it straight with the boat, you can pull the drive straight off the back and the shift shafts will seperate as everything is faceing fwd. in the pic. ya can see that it'd be hard to slide those to parts straight back as there locked together via rotation.....

another vote for ditching the seloc..... get the oem..... ya'll be much happier.....

Re: Starting Problems 1994 3.0 Merc

Update. Pulled drive off today, all went well, also started prepping motor to be pulled on monday. I do have a couple of questions about stuff I saw as I was tearing everything apart:

1. I had a small pool of water in the housing where the driveshaft connects to the drive, also there were pieces of round rubber. The joints on the driveshaft had some rusty residue, but it cleaned right off. Aside from that the driveshaft was well greased and doesn't show signs of wear. Any ideas where that water comes from, by the way, no water in gear oil.

2. Pulled sparks plugs and tried turning engine at alternator, onlt the wheel on the alternator would turn, I was able to get the motor to move a little by using the belt and wrench. Hope this isn't a horrible indicator.

3. I loosened the hose clamps at the top and bottom of exhaust manifold and removed the 2 bolts. Went to pull it off and it wouldn't budge. I do notice some rust where it mounts to the engine. Is it just stuck or did I miss a step.

Any info on how I'm looking so far would be appreciated, I'm sure I will have more questions next week after I get the motor pulled and start tearing it down. Thanks for all your help guys, and you were right, I put it in forward!!!

You know I had the same problem when I wanted to get my starter off to have it tested. I ended up buying 14 inches of extension bar for my ratchet and got the bolts off from the front of the engine. I was so glad that I didn't have to pull the engine.

UPDATE #2

Motor is out, starter is off. Now, for the expert help

I drained all the water contaminated oil out, took off drain pan, and cleaned it thoroughly. I was able to turn the engine by turning the flywheel, which was pretty rusty, thinking this is pretty normal, it is 14 years old. The crank and everything from underneath looked pretty good, there is some surface rust on a couple of the lobes but it wiped off with a rag. Tomorrow I will put a boroscope (sp.) in through the plug holes and see what is in there. What am I looking for in there?? Also, I am going to put oil in and let it flow using gravity, will do this a couple times. I also want to do a compression test, will I have to replace the starter first? What kind of munbers am I looking for on the test? Thanks.

Edit: Can anyone help me figure out what kind of ignition I have. I've heard of two, digital or EST. Any tips on how I can figure it out by looking....Thanks again for your help>

u have to turn the motor over 2 full turns to do a compression test.

i have to replace my starter too, and im in the same boat...i cant find out if there are any last bolts, or if i should just give it a few taps with a sledge...thats what ive done with car starters that were stuck. could u take a pic of the bolts that hold on the starter?
