Yeah the starter was under water, but I had started it twice after the water incident.

You keep answering the simple questions that really don't mean anything at this point. Now, get up from the computer, get your wrenches, pull the spark plugs and turn the engine by hand.
Time to stop talking and do something.

Re: Starting Problems 1994 3.0 Merc

Thanks Haut, I'm about to take you up on that offer. Here's how it went. Started from ignition working back to engine with test light. Get to starter solenoid, no light! Start disconnecting wires and realize that the wire between the solenoid and starter motor has completely fallen apart. Call local part store, they have complete starter in stock. Pick it up, bring back and realize it does not look exactly like the old one. So here is first problem, my current starter solenoid has only three connections on it, the new one has four. Also it doesn't look like it will bolt in to the existing mounts. Which brings me to problem number 2, which I'm sure you know what it is. I can't get the starter off the motor. I think I have the right bolts but they are under the starter motor, very, very, very hard to get to. I stripped one a little bit, I do have tools to get that off, not a big deal. Anyone got any tips I can barely get my hands down there much less a wrench.

You absolutely MUST have a marine starter, not automotive starter.

You may not want to hear this, but on some boats I have had to pull the engine to replace things like starters, raw water pumps, spark plugs etc.
Boat designers do not use things like common sense

Thanks Don, it is a marine starter, in my manual it hints that 2 different starters could be on the motor, there are a few different mounting areas, so it might fit. But I wouldn't know what to do about the connections.

Not sure what distibutor I have, haven't been able to get back to the boat on sunday. Anyways, I have the SELCO manual. The part they gave me is a quicksilver part, I don't have the number on me.....thinking I'm gonna return the starter today and find a merc replacement at another shop or online. I really don't want to pull the motor, any other suggestions???

Get the starter that looks exactly like the one you have....;)
You will either have to do what it takes to get the starter off or pull the engine, or unbolt it enough to hoist it to gain better access.....
Is it possible to repair the corroded wire?......

Re: Starting Problems 1994 3.0 Merc

For Don, I looked at some pics online and I don't think I have the Delco EST, I have a standard cap with breaker points.

Haut, after I got the new starter and realized its wrong I thought of repairing the motor of the old one, I took it apart and it is a total loss, the wires disintegrated and the whole inside was rusted and small pieces of metal. It need to be replaced. I'm thinking motor needs to come out. Which brings me to a question, considering this motor is 14 years old, was trailer sunk, needs new starter in which I might need to pull motor, would it make sense to just put in a new/rebuilt motor and enjoy my boat worry free! Just looking for a what would you do???

I'm thinking of at least pulling it out, replacing starter and then doing a checkup on motor, doing partial re-build, and replace parts that are old like alternator and then dropping it back in. If I find the motor is garbage then I'll look at full re-build or replacement.

Yeah, I think that is the best course of action. Guess I'll start getting the motor ready to be pulled. Aside from being very meticulous and labelling all the connections and cataloging screws and bolts, any real difficulties in pulling the motor out?

Yeah, don't forget to put drive in Forward, and pull the drive before you try to pull the engine.

Bomar, got question referemce putting it in forward, I am doing research before I grab tools and my Selco manual says put it in reverse if engine id left hand rotation. On my filter cover it says it is engine is LH, but my prop is RH. So, do I go in reverse or forward?
