First, when cranking the motor is sounds like something is grinding

The motor does start and runs perfectly fine once it's one, it just makes this sound while cranking:

Any ideas of what could cause either of these sounds? Second video is in reply

Your starter needs to be removed, checked out, look at the ring gear for damage also.the v drive, some are a bit noisy, but it sounds a bit more to me.change the oil in ot,look for metal shavings in the old oil.

The starter is brand new, literally just put in. By ring gear do you mean the flywheel? I checked that before putting the new starter on and no teeth were missing but it did have a bit of rust

The ring gear is the ring with gear teeth that surrounds the flywheel. It is a separate part and why it is confusing you.

The v-drive is rattling hard when it's in gear sounds about normal since the boat appears to be not in the water but on the trailer?

If so, The body of water the boat is used in is the lube to keep the whining sound away. The v-drive is not designed to be shifted out of the water. That sounds like the noise you would normally hear while dry.

Yes the teeth is the ring gear on the flywheel.

Is the new starter OEM or aftermarket?

Did you shim the starter correctly when you put the new one in. I'm going to assume a starter in the boat is the same as a starter on a ford or chevy block vehicle block. You often have to shim them to get correct alignment.

The starter is an aftermarket Sierra: SIE18-5913

How would one shim the starter? That would be a step I missed

EDIT: Watched a little thing on shimming starters, will check contact of the ring gear to starter

Correct, the boat is on the trailer

I will change the oil and try the boat sitting in the water
