starter runs on sometimes

1984 ChrisCraft Scorpion 230, w/ 1994 GM5.7 v8, carburated, Alpha 1 drive. Project boat. After replacing the exhaust manifolds and risers, I am in the process of trying to get this thing running (no fire yet). When I crank it over to try to start it, it will sometimes keep cranking even after I turn the key off. I have to disconnect the battery cable to get it to stop. The key switch appears to be working OK. Could this be from a bad solinoid? The first couple of cranks it does not do this.

Could be the slave solenoid, the start solenoid, or even a rusty shaft holding the bendix from returning.

My Guess is the Starter mounted Solenoid is burnt,+ Sticking.........

check as above stated, a low battery will cause it also

Thank you. I replaced the slave solinoid. Turned out TGBM had the wiring to it wrong as well, and I think it fried. Anyway, seems to be working OK now. Thanks again. Now, if I can only get the the thing to fire up.........
