what is going on that when i go to start my motor, the starter engages and cranks , but after maybe 1-2 seconds it stops and you can hear it wind down....I will wait a second of two till the spinning stops and I try it again...cranks then releases the flywheel, and winds down...its like the juice is being shut off after 1-2 seconds...but the battery is fully charged, and eventually the the motor fires over...

i am wondering is the issue maybe in the solenoid, or is it in the ignition switch, or is it in the windings in the starter???

I had some rpm issues with this starter last winter...so i am thinking, its the starter-starter solenoid combo...but before i take it out.... i thought id ask.

i have two big batteries wire together, and fully chargerd...all the connections were cleaned, and are tight...

I remmeber this happening on my 2001 50 hp as well....vrmmmmmm, vrmmmmmm dieing out....even though the key is still held to start!!! you can hear the starter motor wind down....uits like its getting a second of electricty and then none..

anyone??

thanks

Have you checked the starter gear?

no, if it was a bad gear...seems the starter would keep spnning from the juice i am giving it from the key!!! you know, rrrrrrr rrrrrr rrrrrr like when you have the motor tuned badly and it just wont start.....but the starter keep cranking and cranking....but i dont get that.... my starter gives up it seems...but i will check, its not easy because on the 60 degree looper motors with OIS ignition the whole top of the motor is enclosed....

fully charged dual batterys.....

i can do this thirty times and all of the sudden the motor starts...because the motor is tuned good it starts quick if the starter will crank...its like the starter is giving up electrically.

the jack plate powers up and down, so does the trim motor...lots of juice...

Have you tried jumping the starter direct from battery to see what happens?

you might need to check your wiring connections (big wires) for corrosion.

Re: starter quits after 2-3 seconds....

I am retty sure this past late winter-early spring, i went through all the connections, because the starter was cranking fast enough to ,make spark...and i havent used the boat but maybe 5 times since...so all those connecttions were cleaned and assembled and greased over to prevent corrosion...

but if the consensus is, that this starter bailing ut after a second of spnning could be caused by poor connections...ill go over it all again..

but i am just trying to see if it could also be a bad solenoid...or starter windings... that could give me the results i have described..

I think this has happened off and on for 2 years...but now it happens all the time...

it maybe that you guys still dont know what i am trying to describe , that is happening... I might not be conveying it in best of terms...

but thanks for the replies

What happens if you don't release the key at all Bob, will the starter continue spinning for as long as you leave it in the start position or will it run down to a halt?

mine does it too and i don't know why. that's why i looked in yer thread...hoping for an answer.

disengages itself. has to pop up to engage flywheel. one thousand one and zzzzzzzzzzzeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee, disengages and spins.

I dont release the key!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! the starter bails on its own even if i keep the key turned to start and hold it...., and i cant re try to start it until the starter stops spinning...( winding down)... so the solenoid kicks the bendix out and it spins, but in an instant, the bendix dissengages and the starters stop spinning from power and winds down on its own.... with no change in the key position!!...sometimes its even quicker, like its jumps and almost spins, and then nothing....
it absolutely doesnt feel like a battery power issue....I am 99% sure of that....it COULD be a connection issue...but I am not convinced yet... I am thinking internally something about the starter and or starter solenoid

OK so just to be 100% sure of what's happening.

You can be sitting there holding the key in the START position and the starter is NOT spinning after it's done its little trick on you and come back down?

Re: starter quits after 2-3 seconds....

Bob, what are the year and model of your motor? Mine is 1976 85HP Johnson. It had the same problem at cold start. I know exactly what you are talking about. The key was in START position and the battery was full. The starter spun a few seconds and was shot down completely, like a circuit breaker tripped. I never figure out why.

My workaround is to take off the cowling, push the throttle cam to the START position with the warm-up lever all the way up. Use choke switch in the first try. Don't use choke in the second try because my beast gets flooded easily. Follow this procedure, I usually can start the motor in the second try.

FED that is correct, it is like the juice has been dissconnected...but once it the sound is finnished winding down i can release teh key and turn it again and it all happens again...

laotou: my motor is a 1995 115 ocean runner...

I havent tried anything, because i am getting home late at night and the hose is under the snow...

Re: starter quits after 2-3 seconds....

you may have an ignition problem. If one or more cylinders are not firing at cranking speed, the ones that are firing may be enough to kick out the drive and not enough to start. To prove this, try cranking with the ignition totally disabled. If it cranks fine, then its obviously a ignition issue. You can disable the ignition for this test by engaging the kill switch.....

Could be a bad start solenoid...faulty tips...I have one of those once...check if the terminals out of the solenoid are hot..that?s the very first sign of bad contact...try to connect a jump start wires directly from the battery to starter and if it spins ok, then you got it....

possibly a strange short occurs when the starter gear touches the fly wheel?

I agree with Petry. Try what he suggested.

Is the bendisx shaft cleaned and lightly oiled?

Re: starter quits after 2-3 seconds....

I would test across the small terminals on the solenoid while the key was in the 'start' position and it was doing its trick Bob.

Gotta start somewhere and that will cut the problem down to either control circuit or power circuit failure.
