Is there a cam that pushes the starter pawl into the gear to engage the pull start? Mine takes a little coaxing to come out. Does it need some lovin or do I need to get over it and move on with another? Anyone have a schematic that shows the innards at and below the flywheel?

I'm guessing you're not getting any response because you didn't mention what engine you have (year and hp).

You can find diagrams for engines at shop2.evinrude.com, just looking at those can answer a lot of questions.

better answers had by listing year and serial number...lets us actually know what we are talking about for sure.... that said... I completely agree with Dew2... remove, clean, smile.
however... Beware for if that spring gets loose it has a good bit of power stored in it... suggest safety glasses and no small children around.... spouses pets are optional :D

Sorry, slipped a cog. 2003 40hp 2-stroke. I pulled the starter assy. off but not the plate that sandwiches it between the pulleys. When I re-assembled it it worked perfect for the first pull then reverted to being stubborn. I will probably just pull it off and apart and clean, then I can see what prompts it out in the first place.

I pulled it apart this morning and it seems to be working better now. The pawl had some burrs from wear that I hammered down and cleaned it up. We'll see how it holds up against time.
