Starter issue

When I start my 40hp Evinrude OB TE40ELETB on occasion the starter gear spins but will not engage the fly wheel. A simple tap on the gear will engage it with the fly wheel. Does anyone know if it's the starter or the solenoid that I need to replace or something else.
Any advise would be greatly appreciated.

Disconnect the battery.

With your fingers, walk the starter pinion (gear) up the shaft in the opposite rotation of the starter rotation. Apply a very light grease to the shaft.

In addition, remove the negative battery terminal from the engine block. Clean thoroughly and reattach.

Reconnect the battery.
