Hey guys,

I have a 1980 Mercruiser 470 (170 hp) Serial # 5642196 w/ a alpha 1

Got this machine finally on the water. It started over heating - looks like bad thermostat (replacing tomorrow).

The starter was actually smoking somewhat and getting extremely hot, grinding noise, slow turning---Time for a new one.
I am having a heck of a time finding one. I found a couple but not sure if they will be compatible? I was looking at this one-

My issue is that the year does not seem to jive, but the engine specs are correct? I bought this boat from a guy that didn't have a clue of anything, so i have been starting from scratch.

This forum has helped greatly and appreciate the time you all put into it!

Correction, I thought this was a pmgr starter, but it is a conventional field coil starter. But it will work just fine. Your current starter is listed as #50-72550R2 which is the one without the starter solenoid. The new one will fit and all you have to do is run the wire from the solenoid on the engine block to the starter solenoid. This sets up the block solenoid as the slave. You can substitute a lighter wire (#12 should be fine) with a smaller terminal for the starter solenoid end. should work just fine. There used to be a permanent magnet gear reduction starter available 2-2591-dr-2 but I can not find it anymore.

As for your overheating, have you changed the impeller, if not, that should be priority #1. Just read your other post again duhhhh:facepalm: nevermind:rolleyes:
