Catchy title, huh? No, it didn't get stolen, I'm naming it stolen because i practically stole it from the guy I bought it from.

She is a 196? Starcraft Jupiter V that I picked up for $400.

HAHA! The rug is the only thing stopping my feet from touching the hull! The deck is so bad if the rug weren't there i'd go right through.

Remove the carpet ..... fold it up neatly in case you want to use it again!!

Drill the tops off all the rivets through the deck........

Remove all the stainless steel screws - SAVE THEM!!!

Now the fastest way is to use a circular saw but DO NOT CUT through the wood...... leave about 1/8" shy of going through. Make the cut from bow to stern off center about 4" away from the rivets.

The wood will break under your weight and lif it out.

When I did mine I took the bow secion out in one piece.

There is probably a footrest that is just screwed down.

Cut through the top layer first and rip it out. Grind the heads off those rusted screws. Try to keep the bow piece in tack as a template.

OMG I am so guilty of that one. Did the same thing to mine when I was just trying to patch things up back there and use it. When I finally replaced my transom I upgraded to PVC pipe and 5200 :)

Re: Starcraft project: STOLEN

I have the exact same boat except for the windshield- mine has the little opening that swings open and closed on the bottom of the center glass. These boats are EASY to work on. When I bought mine I only paid $300 with a 50 hp Force outboard PLUS a spare Force 50 hp for parts! It rides pretty decent- I use mine in the Hudson River to chase stripers in the spring. One thing I did though was to ditch the windshield altogether. I didn't like not having access to the bow of the boat.

Re: Starcraft project: "STOLEN"

So, I learned alot yesterday.

1) it was ALOT easier than I thought it would be

2) The wet plywood probably weighed a few hundred lbs

3) the wet foam weighed 150lbs (we weighed it)

Now some questions:

I did notice a few leaks from some of the seams. I keep hearing about Gulvit, but can someone tell me about it and if its right for me? The leaks aren't major, just a few little drips.

When I put the new deck in, I am going to use poly. Someone mentioned that I would need to glass too.... in what manner? I have a gallon of poly and a bunch of csm and mat... which should i use?

when screwing the deck down, should i predrill and fill with 4200/5200?

what foam should i use?

what size area should i leave open for the bilge?

I think thats it for now... hoping to get the gulvit in the next few days.

Re: Starcraft project: "STOLEN"

Gluvit..... order from iboats ..... even after shipping it is cheaper ;) The smallest 2lb can will actually do all the rivets and seams.

When you get new plywood you need to seal all surfaces with resin and it would not hurt to use a layer of cloth....... When you attach the deck you should use aluminum rivets and SS screws..... when you drill into the decking it is a good idea to squirt 5200 into the holes to seal the wood. (Aluminum rivets and SS screws)

When you get to the point of drilling you need to make a drill stop so IF YOU SLIP or the drill grabs it does not get sucked right through the hull. I have found a piece of copper pipe cut off to limit the depth.

Foam? I would use pink board to refill the area.

Re: Starcraft project: "STOLEN"

Well those pics bring back memories as that's exactly what mine looked like. Yeah it was pretty easy. Nothing like what these poor fiberglass guys go through!! If I had to do it again I would definitely do the Gluvit. My boat it pretty leaky. I would coat all the rivets with it that I could get to. I would use the pink or blue construction foam and cut and fit as much as I could under the floor. Mine has about a 20-24" square area in the back for the bilge access and that is plenty. You can then get to the plug opening from the inside and your bilge pump. As far as the glass and screw hole filling......I did mine before finding this site so I didn't know anything. I put bought 3/4" PT ply and screwed it to the stringers with deck screws. Still like new after 5 years. I don't know if the PT is eating through my stringers or not! I do know that if your using poly then you need glass of some sort. One other idea to consider is to coat the inside of the gunnel storage areas with liquid bedliner. That would look sharp when everything is put back together.

Okay, you mentioned using rivets AND screws?? can I JUST use ss screws?

With the gluvit, does it go INSIDE the hull?? or on the outside?

Re: Starcraft project: "STOLEN"

Gluvit inside. ..... only on the rivets and seams.... a little bit goes a LONG way.

I had screws holding my footrest and along the sideboards.

I had rivets on the stringers and a few of the edges.

I have a special request.....a picture of the transom as seen from inside ..... I want to see your knee braces. Hey ezmobee yours too ....... (side note I am beginning to question which model I have based on the stringers and I have triple knee braces on the transom )

Interesting but my bilge outlet is on the starboard side near the top of the hull.

This is the best I have Bob. I wasn't too good with photo documenting when I did my restore. This is from before I replaced the transom. I am also questioning your model. Mine and Andy's are identical except for the windshield. Yours is different. Hey how's that post count of yours looking Bob!!!!!
