will 50% of these things end up in beer cans?
People think aluminum scrap is worth way more than it actually is. That boat is a crazy good deal, and is cheap enough to justify buying an outboard bracket. I wish it were closer to me so I could stash it in my yard.

It does seem like just the thing you wanted to start with. Have you thought about a boat hauler service, since it needs a trailer anyway? On the other hand, I am still paying for the time a Vietnam era Land Rover ambulance showed up in our yard unannounced. Even though we ended up using it for camping later and enjoyed it a lot, I don't recommend that.

Yeah, if it had a trailer I'd consider a red bull and coffee fueled 40 hour round trip, especially with the cheap gas we have now. But there will be others with better logistics. It's just too far away, and boat hauling services are a bit too extravagant for me.

Really have to wonder what some people are thinking.
[h=2]Starcraft Aluminum 3 Seat boat w 6HP Outboard - $1500 [/h]

No trailer.

No trailer, but does it include the donor peddle boat? Or is that strange method of tarping that fine running Johnson that was last serviced in 2009. A double :facepalm:: is deserved!

That Chieftain Express at post #10362, one of you guy gotta rescue her !! It would be a shame to her cut up into a stinkin CC :(
I've been drivin my wife bat sh*t crazy, her knowing I want it. The logistics keep stepping in the way. My GMC isn't a winter truck, she said take her Blazer but something is a bit wonky in the front end and I don't feel comfortable with a 5+ hour tow in the Blazer with that big girl following behind. Then thoughts of bearing or tire problems on the way...BTDT wasn't impressed. We need to see someone here restore her ! lol

I'm sticking with my original plans, the 21' Chieftain is coming home sooner than expected ;)

It is not that far from me, but I really don't need/want anything that big to redo, especially an I/O. From the number of hanging threads of guys that started these big ones and burned out, I think you are wise to stick to one less demanding of time and resources. Not really a good weekend trailer boat either. I know from my little 18 that it will consume about a year of my life. I can't imagine the amount of work involved in that big boat. If I was younger and had thoughts of doing the IC waterway or if I lived on Champlain or something, maybe then. ;>)

Fortunately, time is something I have an abundance of. Was put on disability in '06 from an MVA. Getting it here was really my only worry. I live within an hour of the Finger Lakes and thought it would make the perfect camper to get away. The 21'er will be an easier tow however, especially when I head to Black Lake in Ogdensburg. This has been a rough week though, I've had to work pretty hard at passing it up. Nearly impossible when the wife also likes it lol.

Is this the hard sell? I agree, though, it's a great cruiser. I wonder what the headroom is?

I know I want cruiser someday when I have more free time, but I think it'll look a lot more like this:

Nah, no hard sell, though after what you did with yours I have no doubts you could take it on. Yea, those Pacific boats are pretty special. I'll watch local Craigslist and Uncle Henry's for you. Maybe in 30-40 years I can get one cheap to rebuild ....wait....never mind.

That one is home built. Before power and electronics (and being super frugal) you can build this boat for under $10K and about 300 hours. I just think that wood is a bit easier to work with than aluminum. No fancy welding skill needed.

I'm all over the place on what project I want to take on next. Fortunately I've got a perfectly good boat to use until I figure that out.

Just a quick reply still on topic I think since we are talking about the C list Islander hardtop.type of boat and alternatives. I have the Tolman book "A Skiff for all Seasons" from 1992 and considered doing one a few years back. Apparently they have changed a lot in style since then. I like the forward slanting windshield for more space. There is a place in ME that sells kits, but you probably know that:

Ron, yeah, there's a newer edition of the book that has plans for three boats. Two of them have hard chines and are beamier and longer, and the "jumbo" has more deadrise. The kits are nice marine plywood and cut on a CNC, but they're not cheap.

Sorry guys, back to the regularly scheduled riveted boat scavenger posts. :focus:
