I'm fairly new to the aluminum boat restoration game, but from what I have read on others rebuilds I believe the splashwell does provide stability and structure for the boat, and it should either be kept or replaced with some other form of structure. There are several people who have cut down the size of it, but I don't think anyone has entirely removed it.
