Re: Spray "bedliner" to replace carpet?

I had Line-X sprayed in my boat last winter and love it. I have to kids 5 and 7 and it does not seem to bother their feet. I was able to pick the color I wanted from a book they had at the shop. They only thing I have noticed is I keep the boat under a boat cover outside and if I fish in the afternoons the Line-X is hot when I uncover the boat, but by the time I get to the lake it is cool again. It is about a 45 minute drive for me to get to the water. The hardest part of doing this is the prep work. They wanted me to do it plus it saved me a lot of money, but took many days. You have to get all the old carpet out then all the glue off the deck. My decks are aluminum so I took a paint and rust pad on a 4" grinder and went to work on the floor. It took about 6 pads, but the shop said it was the best prep job he had seen. Here are some pics. They figured the boat to be about 600 sq/ft and added about 60lbs to the boat.

I have found out if you go ultra cheap (rustoleum rattle can) bed liner. Be prepared for frequent touch ups. Only applied to bow top cap and cubby holes along main.

I plan to do that on my boat. At this point I must tell you that I fish and no fishing boat needs carpet. I will be so glad when the manufacturers catch on.
How many big offshore cruisers have you seen with carpet, or for that matter any of the Navy's fine fleet. Haven't yet seen a center console boat with carpet either. Carpet belongs in the house, not on a boat.

That job was very well done.

One word of caution. If you ever plan on selling the boat, you have cut its value in half if you do this.
I love how people makes this statement, because I would gladly pay extra to have a boat line-x instead of carpet. Not to mention I have no intention of selling my boat and if someone wanted to buy my boat they could still add carpet.

Indeed. Manufacturers use carpet because it is cheap and easily hides a lot of manufacturing sins, not because it is the best choice. Snap-in carpet on the family runabout is fantastic. Glued on carpet in a fishing boat is a nightmare.

I think Bubba's comment was more in regards to the people who use it to coat the inside of aluminum hulls attempting to seal leaks and what not. It ends up making a mess of the boat. Seen it on here a few times.

optaylor823's line-x application looks fantastic. Another member on here had that done as well with similarly great results. I went with marine vinyl on my current boat and am very glad I did. Had carpet in my last boat and hated it.

How does the vinyl hold up? I figured it would tear or gouge rather easily.

I just put it in but it seems really sturdy to me.

Hey Bond-o

Durabak has the rubbery texture. If I did another deck, I would apply one heavy coat textured, and seal with non-textured. I applied 3 coats of textured to my Bayliner deck, and it was to much... They have the colors you want also...

Durabak is tough stuff!

Ayuh,... Thank you,... ;)

My boat origanally had vinyl but the wife and I are leaning more toward carpet to replace it. We both figured the vinyl would be to slick after swimming or tubing. Is that a problem with vinyl? I like the bedline idea for inside of gunwales though

Not really. It has a pretty aggressive texture.

There is another product called "Body Shots". It works line Line-X but can be applied as a DIY. The gun is arounr $75.00 and it would probably take two cans to treat a 19' boat. It is the rough finish you see on the newer cars around the bottom of the wheel openings, used to hide stone dings. It can also be painted any color (which helps smooth out any rough edges).

As for the Durabak, does it cover "imperfections" ?.
I had to patch an area in my boat, and was wondering how much sanding work I need to do. My carpet is old and turning loose in several areas. I think I'm going with the durabak.

And all these different mentioned brands of bedliners applied to the deck of a boat. Would this also pertain to wooden decks? How well would it adhere? Would some additional prep be needed? Since i only really know this as going on metal surfaces.

Re: Spray "bedliner" to replace carpet?

I have carpeting in my boat, but I want to use it more for fishing so I want to take the carpeting out. The only problem I see is that it has weird cut outs like shown in my photos and there are carpet panels on the back 2 seats that I would like to remove. Do all boats come with that finished white fiberglass all around or would I have to do more work on it if I want to remove the carpet? My carpet also has holes and it's pretty dirty.

VVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVV Would that white fiberglass be throughout the whole boat?

All I can say is that some relatives used herculiner to coat an outdoor wheelchair ramp that has a pressure treated plywood surface. It has worked well for about 10 years and never gets covered. They used the black and every couple years they use the UV topcoat.
