Speecometer is not working

The speedometer has not worked since I have owned the boat. It's the kind that hangs off the stern and has the pickup hanging just below the bottom of the boat. Checked the pickup to make sure it's not stopped up. What's the best way to check this speedometer?

I thought about shooting compressed air into it.

is it a pitot tube type? that is basically a pressure gauge measuring the pressure of the water being forced into the pickup from your forward movement. i would just buy a new one...the problem could be in the tube that goes from the pickup to the gauge, it could be a clogged pickup, or it could be the gauge is compromised. they are pretty inexpensive.

blow the compressed air from the speedo end and see if you get anything out the pitot end
