I have read that the evinrude 235, or 2.6 XP/GT has a lower unit that is a high performance, or heavy duty unit.
Is this true? And if so, how can you identify the high performance unit over the standard unit?

Jeb do you have a model number? There are physical characteristic differences between the type "M" and type "O" shells, but am unsure on the model you are referring to. Im sure there are internal differences, but external, I dont think so.

I don't think you can tell from looking at the outside. The 2.6 has a special gearset. (same ratio) It is shimmed differently. Unless there is some secret code stamped on the lower unit, it looks like all the rest externally.
